This painting is dedicated to Paula and Hugo
Bernal. In 1995, they visited me in a VA
hospital at Christmas time when it seemed
like there was not much hope. They brought
songs, laughter and friendship, and for a
moment, Vietnam went away. Thank You!
In this painting of the spirit of the water,
named The Lotus, Kimmy and her friends,
the Koi, are protected from the hot summer
rays by these large, lush, green leaves of the
Lotus. Amongst the shadows of the leaves, we
see the bright, pink & white, enormous flowers
with a delicate yellow & green center; the fish
below are following Kimmy. In much the same
way, when friends know that we need them and
they respond with kindness and love, it is
the ultimate act of caring and friendship.
Thanks to Hiroshi Yamaura, for the Japanese poem and Halliday Piel,
we used her handwriting on the prints.
The poem means,
"When I want to meet her, the carp visit
Heaven's lotus shelters us."
